The blog Guest of a Guest broke the story after interviewing Didion at a luncheon celebrating “The King’s Speech”, an historical drama film starring Colin Firth, at the 21 Club in Manhattan on Tuesday.
When asked how the aging process has treated her, she responded, “I’d just as soon not. I’d as soon skip it. Skip that aspect. Skip that.”
She added that she had always planned to continue to keep working on her writing during her advancing years. “It never crossed my mind that I would not,” she said.
Didion did not reveal any more details about Blue Nights. However, she did share her thoughts on the blogging phenomenon: “Well, I don’t really understand blogging. It seems like writing, except quicker. I mean, I’m not actually looking for that instant feedback.”
Didion dislikes the privileging of speed over insight or craft. “It makes me uncomfortable. It’s an entirely different impulse, I guess. It’s like talking.”
She also noted that she hasn’t taken to using a Kindle, the popular Amazon e-reader, because it would be just “one more thing to carry around.” Although, she did notice her brother using one when when he visited her this summer from California. ”They apparently work for people,” she mused.
